Well finally we have arrived in Uganda..... and have managed to find an internet cafe.
The weather is fantastic.
On our first day of arrival, we stayed in Entebbe (the Former Capital of Uganda on the shores of Lake Victoria - where the airport is) What a lovely place. We just chilled out. Traveled on a Boda Boda, and what fun. This is like a moped taxi...... Anyway we went to Aero Beach, which has the air france plane from Israel which was hijacked and forced to land in Entebbe. We were actually allowed to go into the aircraft and have a nose around.
We then enjoyed a few drinks at a bar on the Lake - watching the world go by and play volleyball. Whilst the Ugandan people danced to their african music. In the evening we had a lovely meal at Windsor Lake Victoria. Our hotel was lovely, people cannot do enough to help you.
Yesterday we went to Ngamba Island, where we had to take a 45 minute speed boat ride from Entebbe to Ngamba. At Ngamba Island we seen lots and lots of Chimps. Ngamba Island is the home to orphaned or captured chimps. Ngamba offers a sanctuary which closely resembles life in the wild for these chimps. It was wonderful to watch some of the chimps antics.
Well after the trip to Ngamba, we had a long long drive to Mbarara (where Ian used to live) It must have taken around seven hours due to the bank holiday traffic, it seems everyone was heading somewhere for Christmas. Normally the journey would only take 3 to 4 hours Our poor driver. The roads here are quite dangerous and there is some maniac drivers on the road. However our driver was very cautious. He used to drive for the President. It is actually very reassuring having him, he will travel with us throughout our trip to Uganda. Anyway we managed to stop of at the Equator Sign for a quick photo!!!!!
The drive was long, but there was so so much going on at the sides of the road, it did not seem that long. Just watching everyone and what they are doing, time passes so quickly. Things here are so different. Finally we arrived into Mbarara and Ian was amazed at the transformation within the last 13 years. It has developed a lot. However upon arrival to the hotel which Ian used to go to, it was abandoned - oooops. Anyway we eventually came across 2 ladies who did not have a clue what we were talking about. We decided that we did not like the look of the place. So therefore decided to go to another hotel (which Angela wanted to stay, when initially booking this trip) Lucky enough we managed to get a room, and this hotel is very nice in very nice grounds. Ian was rather disappointed though, he had such fond memories of this place. However things are not always the way they were before....
Anyway today we are just spending the day walking around Mbarara checking out Ian's old haunts. Soaking up the atmosphere.
Tomorrow another long drive to Bwindi, where we shall be going Gorilla Treking for 3 days.
Have a lovely Christmas everyone
